Arnesens father was a skipper and a builder of model ships so Arnesens interest for maritime started at a very young age. Later when Arnesen was educated at the academy of arts he has given the highly esteemed honour to accompany the Danish Royal family on their many travels abroad. Arnesen was known for his detailed and powerful seascapes with large sail ships and often portrayed famous historical events. Arnesen travelled and worked all around the world and his paintings was in high demand. Arnesen is known to be the last of the great old national marine artists. Andersen is most known for his excellent series of landscapes from the northern parts of Copenhagen. His works also include still-life’s and flower scenes. Andersen lived and worked in France from 1919-1925 and was so successful that he received the prestigious award “Mention Honorable” in Paris. 1923. Andersen was also frequently exhibited in Paris at Salon d´Automme where especially his flower and garden scenes were much successful. Andersen returned to Copenhagen in 1925 where he worked and exhibited with the two Art unions, Dyrehavens malere and Kunstnerforeningen af 18. November. Michael Ancher grew up on the island of Bornholm. When he was 16 he began training as a clerk at the Kalø Manor on the Djursland Peninsula. Here he began to draw and paint in his free time and this led to him gaining admission to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he was Pupil of Wilhelm Marstrand and Frederik Vermehren. Michael Ancher came to Skagen in 1874 when he was 25. He was among the first artists that began to show an interest in Skagen, and he was the only one that settled permanently in the town. Michael Ancher is famous for his depictions of the Skagen fishermen, and particularly of the drama of life and death involved in the many rescue operations that were so much a part of the fishermen’s lives. In his large-scale figure paintings he combined the classical composition principles of historical paintings with captivating realism. Michael Ancher has been exhibited world wide.

Asmussen worked abroad most of his carrier and spent many years in the German cities Luzern and Rothenburg. Asmussen begun his carrier with working on theater decors and traveled all around Europe to decorate Europe’s finest theaters in Germany, Norway, Italy and Austria. Later Asmussen returned to Denmark to concentrate on working with paintings. Fritz Johannes Bentzen-Bilkvist was born in Oslo, Norway in 1865.He attended the Royal art academy in Denmark and was a pupil of the master painters P.S Kroyer, L. Tuxen and Fr. Schwartz. Bilkvist also became a close friend of the artist Godfred Christensen who inspired Bilkvist to work on Danish landscapes. Bentzen Bilkvist traveled a lot in Denmark to paint and was known for his detailed and romantic landscapes from Zealand and “himmel bjerget”. Besides working with landscapes Bilkvist also worked as a decorative porcelain painter at Bing & Grondahl and made many drawings and designs to both furniture’s and lamps.

Bloch also worked on theater decors and backgrounds for the Royal Oprah house and the Royal ballet in Copenhagen. His most famous works were the decors from Madame Butterfly in 1953 and the décor of the Shakespeare play Hamlet. Many of the works of Bloch was exhibited at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

About the artist:
Godfred Christensen began painting from a very early age on, and archived such a talent that he became accepted at the Royal art Academy when the artist was only 15 in 1860. During his years at the Academy he worked hard on painting especially forest sceneries and tried to combine early French impressionism with Danish naturalism. Christensen was also a pupil of the Danish master painter F.C. Kiærskou. In 1869 Christensen traveled to Paris and meet many of the French artists of the school of “Fontainebleau” and became highly inspired of their painting teknics. Later that year Christensen traveled to Rom and meet the Belgium artist Xavier de Monthier and Italian artist Enrico Nardini. The French art influenced Christensen the most and continued working on translating the French painting methods into Danish golden age. Today the works of Godfred Christensen is considered one of the mayor art links between the 19th and 20th century.

About Sören Josva Christensen 1892-1948):
Josva Cristensen was primarily a landscape painter but is also known to do portraits. Josva Christensen moved to the Danish village Skörping Stationsby in 1920. There he did a long series of forest scenes and landscapes from the known Danish mountains “Rebild Bakker” This special location attracted many other Danish artists like Harald Foss, Peder Mønsted, Harald Gjersing, Hjort-Nielsen, Ejnar Gjessing and Kaj Drews. Josva Christensens landscapes were always known to be sunlit and colourful yet during the second world war his landscapes became darker and more melancholic. About the artist:
Johannes Meyer came from a middle-class Danish family, who worked in the fish industry. Mayer’s father was a close friend and soldier buddy of Jean Gauguin, who came and lived with the Mayer family during the summers. Jean Gauguin was a great influence for Johannes Meyer and he began painting already as a young child. Meyer was only 18 when he debuted at “KE” The artists fall exhibition in 1936, and there he got a great deal of attention. Wilhelm Lundstrom who was functioning as a censor at the exhibition, personally encouraged Meyer to continue painting. Meyer continued working on his amazing painting skills and attended the technical painting school where he was taught by Martin S. Rasmussen. Meyer became very popular during his lifetime, and could afford working as a full time artist for the rest of his life. Meyer have been exhibited in Denmark, Brussels, New York and Miami.

Svend Sinding Christensen (1898-1980)

about the artist:
Svend was educated at the Royal academy of arts and a pupil of Ejner Nielsen. Svend was known for his charming landscapes and seascapes from his travelles around Europe. He was the brother of the artist Jens Sinding Cristensen. Svend received the honored prize Soedrings Legat in 1969. Traveled abroad to contries like Spain, France and Algier.

Mark Osman Curtis (1879-1959) Scottish Artist.

Mark Osman Curtis (1879-1959).
Mark Osman Curtis was a Scotchman who moved to Denmark just before WW I. He was somewhat of a hermit and was almost frantic about keeping his personal information a secret. Despite this seclusion he is nonetheless known by virtually every art dealer in Denmark. He, however, obviously found better comfort in the company of domestic animals and especially cows. Thus his preferred choices of motifs were village- or tidal meadow scenes with cows and in the former case often with hens. Apart from that he has also made some close-up portraits of calves, but common to his motifs is that humans are seen extremely rare in his paintings.

Bio:
Einer Parslev did portraits, landscapes and flowerpaintings. Especially in his landscapes you can see the strong influence by his fellow Danish artist L.A Ring. From 1950, Parslev worked a lot with the light and shadows in his paintings. Einer Parslev belonged to the group of artists that didn´t got influenced by mordernisme or changes in art. They wanted to uphold the traditional Danish values as it was before the turn of the centery. Parslev have been exhibited in Denmark and Canada.

About Frits Ferdinand Petersen (1816 -1900):
Educated at the Royal art academy at Copenhagen in 1831. Studied at a German art school in 1842. Pupil of C.W. Eckersberg, J.L. Lund and J.P Möller. Petersen mostly worked on landscapes and did a series of landscapes in 1850 with animals and open hunting scenes. In his earlier years he worked primarily on portraits and still-lives. The works of Petersen are known for their impressive details and their effective compositions. Later Petersen worked as a conservator and became the head of the Royal art collection. About Viggo “Christian Frederick” Pedersen ( 1854-1926):
Pupil of C.V Nielsen. Educated at the Royal art academy at Copenhagen 1871.
Pedersen started out as a naturalistic artist and in his early days he did a series of romantic landscapes, forest scenes and religious motifs. Pedersen was later inspired by French realism and became a friend of the artist Remy Cogghe, whom he met in 1883. Pedersen was later influenced by the symbolism, from Gauguin and expressionism from Van Gogh in 1890.
The later landscapes from Pedersen are known for their naturalistic qualities, mixed with modernism expression. Pedersen worked and traveled all around Europe, and was often joined by his many artists friends like: Kr. Zahrtmann, Joakim Skovgaard, Th. Petersen was one of the great Danish artists of the golden age. Petersen’s father died sadly at a young age and Petersen and his family suffered and struggled with poverty. Petersen had to stop in the middle of his promising carrier as a painter to work odd jobs to support his family. The brilliant early works of Petersen was forgotten up until 1982, where the public got reintroduced to his works and the art critics praised Petersen as a brilliant master of art. Petersen is today considered an important member of the Danish Golden age and his works are compared to artists like .Th. Lundbye, P.C. Skovgaard and Vilhelm Kyhn. Peter Toft Petersen (1825-1901)
Born in Denmark, Toft traveled to United States in 1842 to work as a whaler. On his many travels he painted the harbors, the frontiers and cities he worked in. He quickly became famous and got published many times in Harper’s Magazine. Besides working as a whaler he also worked as a gold digger in California, and on the railroad. Later Toft joined the army and participated in the American-Mexican war from 1846-48. Toft continued drawing and traveling right up to his death in his London home in 1901.

Blache was educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1891. Pupil of C.F Sörensen. Blache was also educated in ship construction in 1857. Blache was primarily a marine artist and traveled all his life to paint seascapes, ships portraits and costal scenes. Blache was an extraordinary visionary artist and very much ahead of his time. While other classic marine painters of his time worked with realism, Blache experimented with early impressionism and modernism. There has been much discussion concerning how and where Blache was influenced by impressionism and modernism. Hansen was ahead of his time concerning impressionism in Denmark and was refused servial times when he tried to enter the Danish Royal art academy. Hansen never gave up and continued painting and became a pupil of Zahrtmann and attended his art school. Later hansen formed a lifetime friendship and co operation with the Norwegian impressionists Ludvig Karsten and Henrik Lund where they painted and got inspired of each other. Hansen is known for his very detailed and powerful impressionistic scenes where he used strong dominant colors mixed with French impressionistic lights. After Hansens death in 1946 his paintings was compared with the art of Henri Matisse and Hansen got the nick name The Danish Matisse. Educated at the royal academy of art in 1911. Pupil of Gustav Vermehren, Laurits Tuxen, Viggo Johansen, Julius Paulsen, P. Rostrup Boyesen and Joakim Skovgaard. Olund-Hansen began his carrier with portrait studies and interiors. His earlier works were known for their dark colors and shades. From 1920, Olund-Hansen lived on the island Bornholm during the summers. There he got inspired by the bright lights and colors of the Bornholm nature and from 1920 and onwards Olund-Hansens works were much brighter and sunlit. His series of landscapes from Bornholm received very high praise from the critics and it was especially his bright landscapes the public loved and requested. Olund-Hansen traveled around Scandinavia and stayed in Germany and France in 1926 and Italy from 1932-1937.

About Helmuth Dirckinck Holmfeld (1835 -1912):
Holmfeld was one of the great artists of the Danish golden age. Holmfeld was educated at the Royal art academy in 1855 and a pupil of Hans Gude and Zahrtmann. Holmfeld worked mostly with traditional farm landscapes and animal portraits. Holmfeld worked an traveled in Germany 1863-1874 and Greenland in 1886. Holmfeld later traveled to Seattle in United States in 1890 where he stayed until his death in 1912. Holmfeld has been exhibited at Charlottenborg from 1858- 1883. Holmfeld oil paintings are considered very rare and can almost only be found in private art collections.

Hans Hempel (1888 -1963) Danish well-listed artist:

Hempel was a landscape painter and known for his various landscapes from around Denmark. In 1930 he moved to the island Bornholm and was strongly inspired. Since then he painted his landscapes with bright strong colors. Later Hempel worked together with the artist Joakim Skovgaard and experimented with portraits. Hempel was also a pupil of A.P Rasmussen.

Sören Brunoe (1916-1994-) Well listed danish marine artist.

Brunoe was a marine painter, and the main artist for the Royal Danish navy.
He was educated at Andre Lhotes academy in Paris, and known for his impressionistic seascapes. His motif was mostly seascapes and the ships of the Danish navy, but did also portraits on request. Brunoe became a popular painter in his time and was allowed on board of the ships he painted and often traveled along with the Danish navy when they went out to sea.

About Anthonore Christensen (1849-1926):
Christensen was one of the most well known flower painter of her time.
She gave art lessons to many members of both the Danish and the Greek Royal family. The Royal family also purchased many of her oils both to decorate their castles and to present them as gifts to other royal families and friends. This includes the Russian princess Dagmar who got a flower oil by Christensen as a weeding gift. Christensen archived fame from the beginning of her carrier and her oils was purchased by the national museum of art in Copenhagen already in 1868.

Pupil of her mother Eleonore Tscherning and later a pupil of Emma Thomsen and O.D Ottesen.

Hilkier was known for his impressionistic and modern landscapes and harbor sceneries. He was greatly influenced by the French artists and traveled many times to Paris to work. Hilkier was educated at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1907. His fame and visionary works of art provided him later a membership of the Jury of the academy from 1933-1937. Hilkiers work has been exhibited many places in Scandinavia and at the Danish National museum of art.

Alfred P. Hartmann (Born in Belgium 1928- 1989 Died in Denmark):
Alfred Hartmann was the nephew of the master painter Oluf Hartmann. Alfred was first a pupil of Robert Freyz and Viggo Brandt from 1948-1949 and was later educated at the Royal art academy in 1950 where he was a pupil of Kresten Iversen and Holger J. Jensen. Alfred is known for his large powerful modernistic landscapes where he often used bright and golden colors to make them more impressive. Alfred was born to Danish parents in Belgium so many of his cityscapes was from there. Later Alfred traveled to Paris and Germany to paint and returned to Denmark where he died in 1989. Like his uncle, the master painter Oluf Hartmann then Alfred had a very short artist carrier. Alfred has to retire very early from painting due to heavy sickness. Bokkenheuser was pupil of the master painters Rostrup Böyesen, Eduard Saltoft and Karl Larsen. Bokkenheuser worked on various sceneries like landscapes, cityscapes and modern compositions. He lived most of his life at Nivaagaard, Humlebaek in Denmark where he did a long series of bright modern landscapes and seascapes. Bokkenheuser was known to be a sensitive and reclusive artist who preferred to work alone only accompanied by classical chamber music.

About Clemmen Clemmensen (1885-1964):
Clemmensen was known for his harbor sceneries from Amager in Copenhagen. Clemmensen had a great interest in portraying the Capitals atmosphere, especially sceneries whom no other artists found interesting. Later Clemmensen moved to the country and began working on landscapes and flower scenes. Clemmensen is known for his strong colors mixed with a sketch-like painting technique. Clemmensen has worked as an illustrator for several newspapers and magazines like “Ekstra bladet” and “Videnskabens verden” Clemmensen has also done different interior designs like inside the sugar Fabrics on the Danish Island Lolland. Clemmensen has traveled in Norway, France and Germany.

Gad Frederik Clement ( 1867-1933)
Pupil of Öigaard and H. Grönvold from 1883. Educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1885. Attended the artists study school where he was a pupil of L. Tuxen and Frans Schwartz until 1892. Attended the school of Zahrtmann until 1901. Clements early works shows strong influence of early symbolism and French impressionism. Clement was a great admirer of Paul Gauguin and knew him personally from his first travels to Paris in 1890-1892. Clement traveled at that time with his artist friend Mogens Ballin and together they were invited to the inner circle of French art introduced by Paul Gauguin and his friends. Clement spent the winter months in Paris meeting artists and visiting museums but during the summers he traveled and worked in Bretagne. After working in France, Clement found new inspiration in Italy where he stayed from 1893-1904. There he studied Italian renaissance and worked primarily on landscapes inspired by the Italian masters Masaccio and Lorenzo di Credo. Clements series of works today demonstrate a multi-talented artist. Clement worked with landscapes, symbolism, figure scenes, flowers and portraits. His works are extraordinary diverse and he mastered symbolism, realism and impressionism. Clement has been exhibited all around Europe like: Paris, England, Germany and Italy. He was also exhibited at the Brooklyn museum, United states. Benny Cohn (1896-1980):
Benny Cohn was born in 1896 in Copenhagen and studied at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts in 1912-1917. From 1950 on the artist lived and worked in the USA. He died in Florida in 1980. Cohn worked with many different painting styles, he began working with naturalism and have done many portraits and sunlit scenes with bathing people. Later Cohn artworks became more abstract and he worked with modern scenes where he painted a lot of Skyscrapers from New York. Cohn was also strongly influenced by music and he often painted modern and abstract scenes while listing to Jazz. Cohn was a member of League of Present Days' Artists

Dahl was a landscape painter and was known for his great vide Danish Landscapes.
Dahl was very inspired by the master painter Th. Lyndbye and followed his national landscape tradition. Dahl is known for his bright cool colors and his romantic portray of Danish Nature. Dahl had a gift of nature for painting and was mostly self thought. However he also was educated at the technical school of art in 1903 and took several art classes. Dahl traveled many times in Germany and northern Italy in 1905-08. He also stayed for a while in Paris in 1922 and 1926.

About Bror Edvin Bengtsson (1884-1953):
Bror Edvin Bengtsson was one of the best Swedish marine-painter of the 19th century. Besides painting he also build many detailed model ships. Bengtsson was the son of C. J Bengtsson who owned a shipping company so the fascination of the sea started at an early age. As a young man Bengtsson traveled with his fathers ships and made many paintings and drawings. Bengtsson joined the navy and worked later as customs officer at the harbor of Halmstad, Sweden. It was during his time as a Customs officer that Bengtsson became well known for his marine oils. Many foreign captains requested a portrait of their ships while whey stayed at the harbor of Halmstad. Bengtsson was so busy keeping up with the demands that he often made the sketches on the backside of his Customs documents. Bengtsson was especially known for his fantastic details and never wanted to sell a oil if he was not 100 % satisfied with it himself. The majority of Bengtssons oils and model ships ispermantly exhibited at the marine museum of Halmstad and at the Halmstad Grand library.

Flauenskiold was especially fond of the isolated and picturesque scenes found at Western and northern Jutland and on the Danish island Bornholm. Flauenskiolds life-long fascination with deserted and vast landscape areas produced a long series of works from his travels in France, Germany, Italy and the United States. Flauenskiolds deserted works became an important link between the traditional romantic methods and the early modern realism. And it was these lonely sceneries that later earned him the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone award in 1933, the Bielke prize in 1935, and the Ronge award in 1936 and 1941. Paul Fischer (1860-1934)
Son of the artist Phillip Fischer. Pupil of C. Möller. Educated at the Royal Academy of arts in 1876. Fischer breakthrough came in 1882 when he worked with illustrations for the magazine “ Ude og hjemme” Fischer skillfully captured the atmosphere of Copenhagen with its people. And became known for his series of City scenes from Scandinavia, Paris, Italy and Germany. In the beginning of Fishers carrier he primarily worked on evening scenes, gray afternoons or scenes with people hurrying through the rain or snow. Later during his travels to Paris from 1891-1895, Fischer’s works became more bright and he also begun painting sunlit beach scenes with people bathing. Fischer also worked with illustrations for children’s books and did many famous Poster Designs where he was highly influenced by the masters: Steinlein and Toulouse-Lautrec. Mogens Gad was a pupil and best friend of the artist Julius Paulsen whom he had meet when he attended Julius Paulsen´s fine school of art in 1913. They both travelled to France and Italy where they lived and painted together in the period between 1913- 21. Mogens Gad was known for his many religious paintings and have made severial alterpieces. Gad was a sensitive artist and found his peace in painting, sadly he died of sickness in a age of only 44. Gad have been exhibited many times in Denmark and Sweden.

Emil Hansen / Nolde (1867-1956)Danish/ German well-listed artist.

Emil Hansen / Nolde (1867-1956).
Emil Hansen was born in the village of Nolde near the Danish border in August 1867. At the age of seventeen he became the apprentice of a wood carver near Flensburg, while at the same time practicing his skills as a draughtsman. Between 1888 and 1891 he worked as a wood carver and draughtsman in furniture manufactories in Munich, Berlin and Karlsruhe. In the evenings he took classes at the arts and crafts school. Between 1892 and 1897 he taught technical draughtsmanship at the Industry- and Trade Museum in St. Gallen. He traveled to Milan, Vienna and Munich and through his many hiking tours developed a fascination with mountain scenery. Nolde designed postcards with caricatures of personified mountains which became such a commercial success that he cut short his apprenticeship and moved to Munich in 1898 to work as a painter. Although he was not allowed into the Academy he did study privately and went to Paris for one term to enroll at the Akadémie Julian. In 1901 he settled in Copenhagen. Here he met Ada Vilstrup whom he married in 1902. On the occasion of his marriage he changed his name to that of his birthplace, Nolde. He moved to the island of Alsen in 1903, but spent the winter months in Berlin where he rented a studio. Through an exhibition in Dresden in 1906 the artists of the “Brücke” became aware of his work and invited him to join their association. For two years Nolde took part in the group’s touring exhibition projects and in 1907 he spent several weeks in Dresden. But at the end of the year he left the group - the differences in age and temperament were too substantial for the loner Nolde. In Berlin he painted the nightlife of the metropole and studied the art of indigenous peoples in the Völkerkundemuseum. In 1913/14, fulfilling one of his dreams, he and his wife accompanied a medical expedition to the South Pacific via Russia and China. A great number of watercolors was the product of this journey. In 1927 the Noldes moved to Seebüll where Nolde designed and built a house and studio for himself. From 1931 on he worked on his autobiography. For Nolde the Third Reich brought defamation. His paintings were confiscated from the museums and his work was a special focus of the exhibition “Entartete Kunst” (“Degenerate Art”). From 1941 on he was prohibited from painting at all. Secretly he paint small scale watercolors which he called “unpainted pictures”. After the war, between his eightieth and eighty-fifth birthday he gained various honorations and awards. Nolde died at Seebüll in 1956 and was buried next to Ada in the garden of the Seebüll estate. Their will established the “Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation”.

Highly talented and born with a great gift, Hansen got accepted at the Royal academy in 1881.He was only 20 at that time. He was also a pupil of the Master painter L. Tuxen. Erik Henningsen ( 1855-1930)
Pupil of A. Hellesen and C.V Nielsen. Educated at the royal Academy of arts in 1873. Henningsen was one of the leading artists in Danish naturalism during the 1880ties. Together with the artists Holger Drachmann and Christian Krohg, Henningsen changed the Romanism in art and chose his motifs and scenes as if he was reporting for a newspaper. Henningen works often depictured grim realism like paupers being thrown our of their homes, trial scenes with murders and other sad situations in the human life. Henningsen wanted to be objective in his works and used great effort to depict each situation as accurate as possible.
This let Henningsen to work with a new point of view that made the audience feel they participated in his works. For example: Flower shop scene seen from the florists point of view. This new angle often caused great debate since the works changed from being a piece of art into a manner of provocation. The works encouraged ideas and action instead of just being something pretty to behold. Henningesen worked primarily in Scandinavia but he also traveled and worked in Germany, Italy, France and the Nederland’s from 1892. Falbe-Hansen was a very social aware artist and his favourite motif was landscapes and the working class in Denmark. He did many people sceneries, city scapes from central Copenhagen and showed his views of the social status of Denmark in the 1930´s and 1940´s. Falbe-Hansen was also the cofounder of the art union “Kammeraterne” in 1935. Falbe-Hansen is especially known for his impressive landscapes and populated street scenes, buildings and bar scenes from Copenhagen. His paintings are known to be powerful and colourful painted but what really made his paintings so special was the enormous atmosphere and karisma Falbe-hansen captured in his oils. Erik Hoppe is considered to be one of the greatest artists of recent times, thanks to his splendid colour studies. Anders Hune was baptized Anders Carl Nielsen but changed his name in 1920 to Hune. Hune was the name of a location on the west coast in Denmark where Andreas Hune lived and worked from 1920-1935. He loved the location so much that he permently changed his family name to Hune. Hune worked primarily on farm landscapes with animals or people and on seascapes. He is known for his powerful colors and his interesting painting technique that was a combination between naturalism and Expressism. Besides Scandinavia Hune also traveled and worked in Germany 1920-21 and Paris in 1926. Besides painting Hune also worked with sculptures and became a known author and poet with many books published.

Ludvig Jacobsen was a master in drawing and worked as book and newspaper illustrator. Jacobsen loved the theater and became well known for his portraits of famous classical plays by Moliere and Holberg. About Robert Jacobsen ( 1912-1993)
Jacobsen was self-taught as a sculptor and graphic artist. His earliest sculptures were figures in wood and stone, including a series of Fabulous Beasts, the shape of which was inspired by the encounter with Asger Jorn in the 1940s. In 1947, Robert Jacobsen went to Paris, where he settled and became linked to the Galerie Denise René. That same year he began to work in iron, and he left the closed form, moving instead to open iron constructions of rivetted elements. These non-figurative sculptures, which at first were painted black, are a kind of spatial drawing, characterized by simplicity and rhythmical elegance. During the 1950s Robert Jacobsen developed small, imaginative, humanoid figures of scrap, dolls, which were inspired by the African art he himself collected. Later, he incorporated colors into his constructivist sculptures, and about 1965 he started on large-scale relief’s in wood and iron. In addition, he undertook a large number of official adornments in Denmark and abroad. Alongside his sculptural work, Robert Jacobsen went in for colored graphics. He lived in France until 1969 and was a professor at the Academies of Fine Arts in Munich (1962-1981) and Copenhagen (1976-1985). About Helge Jacobsen (1916-1987):
Helge Jacobsen was one of the Great Danish visionary artists of his time. Besides painting he also was a known Jazz guitarist, poet and sculptor. Jacobsen started painting and playing Jazz during the forties while Denmark was occupied by Germany. Jazz music during the 40ties had a great influence on many Danes because it symbolized freedom and the friendship with America. Jacobsen is most famous for his abstract still life’s and modern composition where he with wild colors and figures portrayed the feeling of Jazz. Jacobsen painted while listing to music and worked to capture the feeling of Swing and Jazz to his artworks. Professor Luplau Janssen ( 1869-1927)
Janssen was educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1885. Pupil of P.S Kroyers and attended his school in 1891. Later educated at Academy Ranon, Paris in 1909. Janssen worked primarily with sunlit farm landscapes and figure scenes, but is also known for his excellent portraits, where the most famous ones are his children portrays and Janssens portray of the Danish Philosopher Soren Kirkegaard. The works of Janssen are known for their great details and their many layers of paints that gives the scene a special unique light and atmosphere. His works often contain many fine impressionistic brushstrokes filled with numerous colors giving the finished scene a dreamy look. Janssen became very popular for his series of bright colorful works and opened his own art school together with fellow Danish impressionist Viggo Pedersen. Jensen was educated at the royal art academy in 1921 and a pupil of Viggo Brandt and Ejnar Nielsen. Later he was a pupil of Axel Jörgensen from 1922-1930. Jensen was strongly influenced by Cézanne and Edvard Weie. Jensen experminated a lot with different forms and shades and is known for both his expressive and cubistic sceneries. In 1928 Jensen co founded the art union “Decembristerne” where he worked hard to create a forum for young artists to express themselves and to help them with exhibitions. “Decembristerne “ is still open to this day and is now a well known modern exhibition. After many years travelels Jensen later became an art teacher at the Royal art academy where he influenced many young students like Helle Thorborg, Erik Lagoni Jacobsen, Vera Myhre and Alfred P. Jerichau was educated in Germany and Italy during his youth and studied art with his mother Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann. Jerichau also attended the School of Kr. Zahrtmann from 1886-1887. Jerichau worked and traveled all around the world. Due to Jerichau noble background he had the opportunity to visit and work in many exotic countries like Russia, Egypt and India from 1893. He later traveled to Italy where he lived from 1886-1888. Jerichau worked primarily with impressionistic landscapes and was very fond of the colors of winter and spring. Jerichau worked in Denmark during his youth and exhibited a series of impressionistic Landscapes. The landscapes caught the attention of the Russian Royal family who later also helped him finance his many exotic travels. The critics of the time called Jerichau a true visionary and talented artist and his paintings were popular and frequently exhibited. But sadly as many other visionary artists his carrier was terminated when Jerichau died from illness at the age of 41. Jersild was known as a very shy and sensitive artist who rarely wanted to sell any of his paintings because he felt a piece of him self was sold as well. He worked hard on every oil and was known to take long periods to finish a painting. Jersild was untouched by the snobbism surrounding the art industry and was known to always speak his mind whether it was popular or not. Jersild was a role model for many young artists of his time who often came to him to get his opinionand advice. Jersild was a pupil of the master painters Vermehrens and Julius Exner who he idolized and admired. Jersild was known especially for his extremely detailed architect-paintings. His interior paintings have been compared to Peter Ildsted and Valdemar Irminger. August Jersilds oils have been exhibited at the Castle of Sönderborg and the Haderslev museum of art in 1981.

About the artist:
Sophus Jürgensen came from a family of artists and began painting and drawing from at early age on. Jorgensen’s great grand father was the artist Johannes Senn. When jurgensen finished his studies atthe Royal art academy he soon after got a job as a artist at the largest Danish newspapers. From 1904-1907 he worked at the newspaper “Politiken” where he archived great fame with the creation of the comic strip “ The Lazy boy” From 1925-37 he worked as a decorative painter and decorated the charming little baker shop “Josty”. Later he worked as an artist at the theaters where he made many remarkable portraits of the Danish actors of his time.

Jürgensen was a pupil of Peter Ilsted and Frantz Henningsen.
Jürgensens talent and work has been compared to the English artist Gibson.

About Martin Kaalund-Jörgensen (1889-1952):
Kaalund-jörgensen was known for his great modernistic landscapes that was inspired by French fauvism and by artists like Edvard Munch and Vilhelm Lundström. Kaalund-Jörgensen was a pupil of L. Tuxen and Rostrup Böyesen from 1910-1914. Later Kaalund-Jörgen moved to Silkeborg in Denmark where he met and inspired Asgar Jorn. Kaalund-Jörgensen lived in Silkeborg from 1921 to 1942 and while he lived there he became Asgar Jorns first art teacher and mentor. Kaalund-Jörgensen is mostly known for his colourful expressive landscapes but is also known to have done portraits. Kaalund-Jörgensen has travelled all around Scandinavia and in Italy, France and Holland. Johansen was educated at the royal art academy in 1901 and worked as a decorator along with Aug. Jerndorff and Joakim skovgaard. Johansen was especially known for his very detailed harbor scenes from Copenhagen and Dragör. Johansens favorites motifs was seascapes and fishing boats so Johansen spent a long time studying the fishing boats at the channels of Copenhagen. Besides harbor sceneries, Johansen also worked with portraits. Johansen also worked and traveled in Italy, Germany and France from 1905-1921. Einer Oswald Johansen ( 1893-1965)
Born on Jan. 5th 1893 in Copenhagen, Denmark. After attending The Techn. School (Copenhagen) he was admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1913 (studying under the famous Julius Paulsen) and graduated from there in 1920. He made several study tours to France. In recognition of his talent and work, he won the Ronge Prize in 1920 and the Serdin-Hansen Prize in 1931. He debuted at the esteemed Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in 1916 and exhibited there almost continuously until 1964. He was also a frequent exhibitor at the Artist´ Fall Exhibitions (1917-19), 1924-26 and 1928-32) and at the Charlottenborg Fall Exhibitions (1922, 1931 and 1938). Johansen was presumably highly influenced by his teacher, Julius Paulsen. Initially he made a broad range of interiors with knitting old women or sewing young girls but later he turned to landscapes and picturesque town- and cityscapes.

Hans Knudsen (1865-1947)
Educated at the School of Zahrtmann in 1888. Knudsen was primarily a landscape artist and known for his sunlit scenes from northern Jutland in Denmark. In the beginning of Knudsen’s carrier his works was compared to the artist L.A Ring. Both artists focused on realism and worked with great accuracy. Later Knudsen befriended the artist Albert Gottschalck with whom he worked and traveled with for many years. Knudsen worked with many different painting methods and in his later years his scenes got more lighter and brighter and closer to impressionism. Knudsen is known for his landscapes but is also known to have done portraits and interiors. About Fritz Kraul (1862 -1935):
Kraul was educated at the royal art academy in 1887 and was later a pupil of the royal decorator Hansen Kjaer. Krauls paintings are known for their charming style and their romantic quality. Kraul was a naturalist but always added nostalgia to his paintings and artworks. From 1880-1896 Kraul traveled to Egypt, turkey, Germany and Greece. Kraul also worked for a long time in Bukarest where he did decorations in their churches. Besides painting, kraul also worked with poster designs, book covers and decorated ceramic pieces. Kraul has been exhibited at the World fair in Paris and at the Royal art Museum in Berlin. Pupil of H. Grönvold from 1906. Educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1917, where he was a pupil of Viggo Johansen, L. Tuxen, V. Hammershöi and Jul. Paulsen. Kunert was a naturalist and worked primarily with open landscapes, beach and forest scenes. Kunert purchased the manor house “ Trongaarden” in 1918. There he began a small artists colony along with his artists friends: Wilhelm Scharff, Hugo Liisberg and V. Haagen-Müller. Kunert is known for his special lights and often worked outdoor at dawn or at the early afternoon. Besides Denmark, Kunert also worked during the summers in Norway and traveled often to Italy, Spain and Germany from 1922. Ove Kunert was a favorite at the Academy and was exhibited at Charlottenborg every year from 1914-1973.

Kornbeck was educated at the Royal academy of art in 1852. Pupil of Heinrich Hansen. Kornbeck was highly influenced of his teacher Heinrich Hansen and worked primarily with interiors and architectural scenes. Kornbeck was famous for his amazing eye for details and worked very long and hard on each of his work. Kornbeck also had an unique sense for lights and shadows and many of his works contains sunsets and evening scenes. The skills and talents of Kornbeck became even more obvious in later years when Kornbeck lost one of his eyes in an accident in 1868. Regardless of the accident Kornbeck continued to paint and his works were as detailed and remarkable as before the accident. Kornbeck has worked with many church and castle interiors in Denmark. Like The Frederiksborg castle and Rosenborg Castle. Kornbeck traveled and lived in Italy from 1860 where he worked in Milano, Verona, Siena, Assisi, Viterbo, Rom, Subiaco and Palermo. Kornbeck traveled to Egypt in 1887 where he did a series of amazing landscapes with Pyramids, Spinks and ruins.

Evgenij Kleno ( 1921-2005)
Evgenij Kleno was born in Denmark. His mother Anna Afanasievna Ivanoff was Russian. Kleno was a private pupil of bizzie Hoyer from 1941-1946 and Pupil of Isaac Grünewald from 1943. He was later educated at the Royal academy of fine arts in 1948, where he was a pupil of Vilhelm Lundstrom and Olaf Rude. Kleno works are known for their powerful expressive brush movements mixed with bright lights and deep colors. He worked primarily with landscapes and still-lifes, but is also known for his portraits and nudes. Klenos was very inspired by his fellow modernists like Edvard Weie and Karl Isakson but quickly developed his own unique style which was a combination of Expressionism and Fauve. During the German Occupation of Denmark, Kleno fled to Sweden where he became a pupil of Isaac Grünewald. Kleno was married to the Greek modernist and author Velonia Dardano Koyai, whom he had meet on a journey to Greece. Kleno traveled and worked in Paris from 1949. During his time in Paris, Kleno met and befriended the artists Robert Jacobsen, Richard Mortensen, Asgar Jorn and Poliakoff.. They lived together at the Danish artists house in Paris and they also worked on several projects and had many successful combined exhibitions at Galerie Denise René in Paris. Kleno also worked in Italy from 1952 and Spain from 1955. Kleno later moved to France, where he had a residence in the village of Bervardière, Dordogne until his death in 2005. During his lifetime Kleno received the prestigious Koefoed award in 1961 and the Serdin Hansen Prize in 1985. Harry Kluge ( 1879 – 1963)
Kluge was educated at the Technical school in 1897. In 1910 Kluge worked for the fine Porcelain studio Bing&Grondahl. During his time at Bing&Grondahl, Kluge meet and befriended the Marine artist Chr. Benjamin Olsen. Olsen who was a famous and successful marine artist at the time soon realized that the young Kluge had an extraordinary and raw talent for seascapes and ship portraits. Olsen helped and guided the young Kluge and soon was Kluges works in very high demand. It was especially the royal navy and officers who requested Kluges works. Kluges works had a unique and dreamy atmosphere that were very popular especially for retired officers. Kluge worked primarily with seascapes, ship portraits and harbor scenes. But he also worked with portraits and landscapes on rare occasions. Kluge was particularly fascinated with working with different illuminations and in order to capture natures different lights, Kluge was often seen sitting near the harbor during rainstorms, thick mist, snow storms, early mornings or in the middle of the night. Although these effort made his works unique, Kluge also had suffer from being confused with a hobo and was at occasions detained by the police or guards who did not recognized or believed he was Harry Kluge the marine artist. Kluge won the prestigious Benny Claudi-Pedersen art award in 1921. And was featured at the Danish national exhibition at the Brooklyn museum in 1927. Kragh was influenced by French modernism and worked in Paris from about 1925 – 1939. He also later traveled in Germany and Italy. Kragh is primarily known for his landscapes and harbor scenes and is known for his series of works from the Danish Island Bornholm. About the artist:
Helvig Kinch is best known as a animal painter. She grew up close to Christiansburg’s royal horse stables, and spent her childhood watching the Danish king horses training and exercising in the court yard. Kinch favorite motif was horses and painted and drew them all her life. Her drawings and paintings were so accurate and detailed that several of them was used as illustrations in scientific books. It was hard for a woman to be accepted as a artist in the late eighteen century and this inspired kinch to start the art union “Community of female artists” in 1916.

About Christen Köbke (1810 – 1848):
Christen Köbke was almost forgotten after his early death, but is today considered one of the most outstanding landscape artists and portraitists from the period 1800-1850. Köbke was a pupil of C.W. Eckersberg, from whom he derived his interest in nature. Later, he distanced himself from Eckersberg's sober attitude and became more romantic in expression. In 1838-40 he went to Berlin and Dresden and then on to Italy. Köbke applied for admission to the prestigious Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1846 but he was rejected. He died of pneumonia two years later, and the Danish public paid little notice. At the end of the 1800s, scholars and the public began to appreciate Köbke, leading to his current reputation as the most internationally renowned Danish painter of his generation. Köbke´s well-composed and harmonious paintings are today internationally recognized especially for their colouristic qualities and their poetic portrayal of everyday life.

Elisabeth was the wife to the artist and author Hans Scherfig (1905-79) and has illustrated many of his books. She was born in Austria and was a pupil of Professor Franz Cizek in Vienna and Reinhold Klaus from 1921-26. After working as a teacher at the Walden-School, N.Y from 1928-29, she moved to Denmark where she meet Hans Scherfig and stayed there until her death in 1994. Elisabeth worked with many projects in Denmark and has decorated the Illum building in Copenhagen and did interior design for DSB: The Danish Train Company. Elisabeth was very inspired by the Danish modernistic art group “Corner” and she worked primary with expressive landscapes and portraits. Elisabeth is known for her light expressive landscapes where the light colors seams to glow from the canvas. Elisabeth Scherfig Karlinsky has been exhibited in Denmark, Vienna, Paris and New York.

They were considered very unique and gave an amazing insight in the persons psychology and behavior. Levy was niece to the Danish master painter Kristian Zartmann . She was educated at the royal art academy in 1902 where she was a pupil of Viggo Johansen. Levy also attended the art school of N.V Dorph from 1904-1905. Later in about 1906 Levy traveled to Paris and Italy where she Studied at the French academy in Rome. Levy primarily painted portraits and was a very popular and requested artist. About Niels Anker Landberg (1916-1973):
Landberg attended the Royal art academy in 1933 and was a pupil of Kresten Iversen and Sigurd Wandel. Landberg is known for his strong modernistic paintings that portrayed common workers and fishermen. Landberg lived and worked in Paris from 1945-49 where he got strongly inspired by French painter André Fougeron. Like Fougeron, Landberg worked on portraying the hardship and tiresome everyday life of common workers. Landberg personal history is a sad one. During the German occupation in Denmark Landberg joined the resistance party “ BOPA” where he among other things had to execute Danish informers and Nazi sympathizers . Landberg was a Danish national hero after the war but he rare spoke of what he did and witnesses during world War II .. His time in the resistant party had changed him forever and he could not bear to live in Denmark and moved to a remote country house in Sweden. In 1973 landberg committed suicide by throwing himself from a cliff near his house in Sweden. As a suicide note Landberg left a large collection of powerful oils. About Frants Landt (1885 -1975):
Landt was an educated chief officer and worked onboard many ships that sailed around the world. One of his most famous works was the series of seascapes from Greenland during his frequent travels there from 1900 to 1952. In 1936, Landt was chosen to accompany his royal highness King Christian X of Denmark to Iceland and the Faroe Islands, where Landt worked on a series of seascapes requested by the King. Landt has also worked on historical pieces, portraying famous sea battles and other historical events. Many of Landts works was later reproduced and featured in Newspapers and Magazines. Landt held private exhibitions in 1932 and have been exhibited at charottenborg in 1936. Many of Landts works still remains in the Royal collection in Denmark.

Larsen was one of Denmark’s youngest talented artists. He was only 20 when he debuted at his first art exhibition at the artists fall exhibition in 1917. Later he was accepted at the royal art academy and graduated in 1929. During the 1920´ties he joined the Modern art group “ De fire” where other members was Svend Johansen, Vilhelm Lundstrøm and Axel Salto. The group worked and traveled and stayed for long periods in France and Italy 1921-25 where they did landscapes from Paris, Bormes and Cagnes-sur-Mer and Rome. Larsen worked primarily with landscapes but has also done expressionistic portraits and still life’s. Besides painting Larsen also worked as a sculptor at the royal porcelain fabric in 1940. Karl Larsen has been exhibited numerous times in Scandinavia and in Paris and united states.

Born in Latvia, former Russian state in 1885 and died in Copenhagen in 1967.
Studied in Sct. Petersburg in 1906, later traveled to Copenhagen where he was educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1908. Pupil of Laurits Tuxen, Viggo Johansen and Gotfred Rode. Traveled to Paris during the 1920ties where he studied at various schools and was exhibited. Leepin was very inspired by early Scandinavian Modernism and worked primarily with figures and landscapes. His works are known for their bright colors and tight compositions where he often let green colors dominate his works. Leepin worked and traveled in Moscow in 1921 and stayed in Paris from 1923-26. Later he traveled to Italy and northern Africa where he traveled around from 1927 to 1930. Leepin felt a strong connection to Denmark and Danish art all trough his life and constantly returned to Denmark until his death in Copenhagen in 1967. Born in Annedal in Göteborg. Educated navel architect. First exhibition in 1950 at the naval museum in Göteborg. Ludvigsson became quickly an experienced marine artist with a keen eye for details and accuracy. Ludvigssons many travels gave him a unique opportunity to study the many colors and shapes of the oceans. Harald W. Lauesen ( 1913-1989):
Lauesen was German but moved to Denmark in 1934, where he stayed until his death. One of the reasons Lauesen moved to Denmark was because he felt to persecuted and to uncomfortable to continue his work in Germany. Lauesen was very involved in the Anti-war movement at the time when Hitler came to power in Germany and during the second world war. Lauesen frequently spoke out against the German government and protested by exhibiting his art in spite that his works was considered ugly and illegal by the Nazi party. Lauesen was educated at the art school of Max Beckmann in 1929, and attended the art academy in Düsseldorf where he was a pupil of W. Häuser and Paul Klee from 1931-1933. In Denmark Lauesen attended the Royal art academy where he was a pupil of Sigurd Wandel and Kraesten Iversen from 1935-1940. Lauesen was an expressionist and highly influenced by his teacher Paul Klee. Later Lauesen meet the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and was so moved by his art that Lauesens own work got a more “ Nordic” touch to it. Lauesen was a very sensitive and shy artist and worked primarily with expressing his inner thoughts to the canvas. His works are known to be personal and symbolic and very impressive in their colors. Lauesen sensitiveness and shyness got very famous in 1950, when he got a bad review from the art critics in Denmark. Lauesen took the bad review very personally and moved away to an isolated area in Denmark. Lauesen stayed and painted there for the rest of his life and never wanted to be part of art business again. About Inga Lyngbye (1923-?):
Lyngbye was educated at the artwork school in 1941 and a private pupil of Rostrup Böyesen from 1942-43. Inga belonged to the COBRA art group and worked with many medias like oil, photos and other graphic arts. She was a surrealist and greatly inspired by the Russian Marc Chagall. Lyngbye has traveled in France 1946-47, Nederland 1947, and Paris and province 1991-92. Inga Lyngby was the mistress and muse of the Danish poet Jens August Schade (1903-1978) and lived with him from 1948-1955. She illustrated his collection of poem entitled “The earth greatest happiness” from 1950. The collection was dedicated to her and in his poems he described her as “The power of life and the madness of life in a little blue skirt” Besides arts Lyngbye has worked as an director and actress at the theaters.

Worked later as an art teacher and professor at the royal art academy in Copenhagen and at the Academy in Berlin. Matthiesen worked primarily with portraits and landscapes. His portraits were very popular during his time and he received many official requests from nobles and military people. One of Matthiesens most famous works is the painting “Rigsdagsbilledet “ It took 6 years to complete and was a composition of 225 portraits in one scene. Each of the 225 characters were done after live models, and the painting is today considered as one of most important Danish works. It is today exhibited at the parliament in Copenhagen. In 1890 Matthiesen traveled to Paris, where he worked on landscapes every summer and spring from 1890-1895. In 1893 Matthiesen traveled to the United States where he worked with the Danish part of the exhibition for the World Fair in Chicago. In 1894 he traveled and worked all around Italy. In 1898-1899 he worked in Berlin. From 1908-1909 Matthiesen worked in Russia and in 1929 he traveled to Bangkok and India. Nathan is known especially for his light colors and his charismatic landscapes from the peninsula Mols, in Denmark.

Johan Neumann ( 1860-1940)
Johan was the nephew of the famous marine artist Carl Neumann (1833-1891), and received most of his training by him. Like his uncle Carl, Johan Neumann was a marine artist and worked primarily with seascapes and ship portraits. Johan worked most of his life outdoors and often traveled to the coast of Skagen and to the Ise Fjord in western Jutland. Johan Neumann was known for his detailed portrays of the famous Frigate Jutland and for his series of shore side works with smaller fishing vessels. Johan was also known for his historical seascapes, where he portrayed the many famous sea battles in Nordic history. Johan worked primarily all over the Scandinavian coastlines but traveled and worked in Island from 1892.
The works of Johan Neumann has been exhibited numerous times in most Scandinavian and European marine and nautical museums.

Educated at the School of Gustav Bachmann from 1935-1938. Later educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1940. Nielsen was strongly influenced by the early European fauvists and modernists. Nielsen worked with landscapes and portraits but was most known for his still-lifes. Nielsens works are often defined by simple and clear light colors. About Helge Nielsen (1893-1980):
Helge Nielsen was educated at the Royal art academy in Copenhagen in 1920, and a pupil of Julius Paulsen.Nielsen was a naturalist and concentrated on working with sceneries with people and children. His most famous paintings was from the Danish island Bornholm where he did a series of sceneries of the gardens and houses located at the islands east coast. Besides painting Nielsen was member of the jury on the royal art academy. He also worked on improving the conditions of the artists of his time and co-founded the national art foundation in 1958.

Nikolaisen was educated at the royal art academy in 1916 where he was a pupil of Rostrup Boyesen. After his studies he traveled to Paris where he was greatly inspired by the great French impressionists. Nicolajsen was also inspired by the Danish artists L.A Ring and Hammershöj. Nicolajsen is known for his colorful landscapes and detailed portraits. Ole Henrik Benedictus Olrik ( 1830-1890)
Educated at the royal art academy in 1844. Pupil of H.V Bissen in 1846 and pupil of Thomas Couture in Paris from 1854-1855. Olrik begun his carrier as a sculptor and worked under the guidance of H.V Bissen. Later Olrik changed his media and focused on working with oil paintings and drawings. Olrik was friends with Carl Bloch and F.C Lund with whom he worked and traveled in Italy from 1862-1863. Olrik worked in the beginning with Landscapes and made many sunlit scenes portraying farmers at work. Later Olrik focused on historical and mythological scenes. Olrik works was in high demand and did paintings for both the Danish Royal family, Danish nobles and the Danish government. Olrik also worked on altarpieces. One of Olriks most famous altarpiece was ” the mountain sermon” Denmark’s largest altarpiece located at the Sct. Matthews church in Copenhagen. Olrik worked on the altarpiece for many years and it consists of 130 fully detailed different people in addition to a large detailed landscape with mountains and trees. Olrik was a true renaissance man and had talents for both sculpting, painting, drawing and also worked with crafting silver dishes and porcelain ornaments. Olrik worked and traveled all around Scandinavia and worked frequently in Germany, Italy, France, United kingdom and Holland from 1858-1879. Olsen is one of the more mysterious Danish artists. Olsen never received any training in arts nor was he from an upper class family. Olsen was from a normal working class family and both Olsen and his farther worked for many years as machinists in a factory. Nonetheless Olsen was an amazing artist and although he rarely had the cash for painting materials he managed to create a series of stunning harbor scenes and portraits of the street girls working at Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen. The works of Olsen has many impressionistic and naivistic qualities to them but his style is unique and captivating. Olsen suddenly died in 1966 at the age of 61 of reasons still unknown. About the artist:
Sadly Carl W Petersen was born in poverty and with sickness.
This severely prohibited him to function regularly as a artist.
He was a pupil of Zahrtmann and attended his art school from 1903-08.
Carl mostly worked on landscapes and known especially for his landscapes from “Odsherred and from the cost of Zealand. After carls death in 1940 his true fame and talent was reveled when many of his works was purchased by both the king of Denmark and the king of Norway. The Danish Prince Knud also own several works by Carl W. Petersen.

Educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1888. Attended the School of Zahrtmann from 1901-1907. Studied in Italy at T.V Papari in 1927 and 1931. Rud-Petersen begun his carrier with working on alter pieces and fresco designs. His most famous works can be found at the church in Viborg, where he worked with Joakim Skovgaard from 1899-1901. Other major works by Rud-Petersen are visible to this day at the Vodskov church and Stagstrup Church. Rud-Petersen also did a series of landscapes, that were especially known for their excellent portray of summer evening moods and people at work. Educated at the technical school in Copenhagen where he was a pupil of H. Gronvold. Later educated at the Royal academy of arts in 1896 where he was a pupil of Frants Henningsen and Otto Bache. Philipsen begun his carrier as a portrait artist and was highly inspired by Rembrandts color use and settings. Philipsens impressionistic works begun after his stay in Paris from 1910. Philipsen was very inspired by the French masters he had encountered during his travels and worked primarily with impressionism until his death in 1936. Philipsen traveled many times in Italy in 1903,1907 and 1927. Paris in 1910 and 1927. And took other journeys to Germany, Holland and Sweden. Philipsen is known for his impressionistic and modernistic works from Copenhagen and from the harbor village, Dragör where he stayed from 1919-1936. Philipsen also stayed with the artist Sven Schou at his home near Mariager Fjord. The beauty and special lights of the Fjord also attracted many other artists like, Einar Olsen, Henrik Schouboe, Aage Lönborg-Jensen and Lauritz Mikkelsen. They all stayed in the same house and frequently worked together during the long summers. Philipsen was also a great art collector and purchased many works during his travels. His collection included many works by Fridolin Johansen, Albert Gottschalk and Th. Philipsen. He also had a large number of works by French masters and Chinese and African antiques. Victor H.W. Qvistorff (1883-1953)
Qvistorff was one of the last traditional marine artists in Denmark. Qvistorff was strongly influenced by his parents to be a business man and never got the chance to study art in his youth. However Qvistorff continued to paint privately and sent one his seascapes to the Royal Art Academy in 1921. The work was exhibited in the same year at Charlottenborg and everyone was curious by the young unknown talent. Two of the visitors at the exhibition were the known artists L.A Ring and H.A Brendekilde. They were fascinated by Quistorffs raw and untrained talent and they both encouraged and helped Quistorff to continue his works. 3 years later Qvistorff was finally able to quit his job as a businessman and worked as a full-time marine artist. Qvistorffs works were known for their mixture of impressionism and realism. Qvistorff wanted his works to be as realistic as possible. He often sailed around in his motorboat looking for ships and even followed them in his boat in order to capture their movements on the canvas. Qvistorff was highly respected by everyone from the Royal navy to the common sailors. His seascapes did not only give a stunning accurate portray but also had a special psychological charisma to it that showed the ships personality. Needless to say, Quistorff works were in very high demand and did numerous requests for Admirals at the royal Navy, captains, shipping and cruise companies and shipyards. In 1931 Qvistorff received additional fame for his illustrations for the monthly maritime magazine “ Vikingen” Qvistorff did several of the colored covers and many illustrations to the articles.

About Martin S. Rasmussen (1883-1971):
Rasmussen was called the grandfather of Dyrehaven and well-known for his sceneries from Dyrehaven (A large forest area and nature park in Denmark.) Rasmussen was born near the Dyrehaven and spend most of his life studying and painting the large old trees and the wild deer’s who lived there. Rasmussens landscapes from Dyrehaven are especially known for their excellent portrait of the morning or afternoon sun setting on the trees and Rasmussen’s special use of light and shadows. Rasmussen was one of the first to be called a Dyrehaven artist and co founded in 1915 the famous art union “Dyrehavens malere / The artists of Dyrehaven”. Rasmussen’s landscapes was very popular and was exhibited in all the art unions exhibitions from 1915 to his death in 1971.

Preben Rasmussen ( 1919-?)
Preben Rasmussen was only eleven years old when he began his painting career. During the course of his life, he made steady trips throughout Europe concentrating on France, Italy and Switzerland. Of his many paintings, most depict Paris, especially Montmartre and Sacre Coeur. Like Camille Pissarro, he regularly painted the same scenes at different times in order to create the diversity of light and darkness as the day progressed. The inspiration he received from Van Gogh and Gauguin is apparent from the swirling colors and strong contrast between darkness and light. The moody atmosphere conveyed by his paintings is further enhanced by the 3-dimensional aspects which the thickness of the palette portrays.

About Lars Rastrup (1862-1949 ):
Educated at the royal art academy in 1882. Pupil of Fr. Vermehren and Holger Gronvold. Rastrup grew up in an orphanage and was very poor, this experience influenced his art in his earlier years where he primarily worked on portraits of poor farmers and workers. Later Rastrups talent drew the attention of the wealthy art collector Heinrich Hirschsprung (1836-1908). Hirschsprung was one of the first to discover Rastrup and helped him with financing his art materials. Besides Rastrup, Hirschsprung also financed and collected the works of the skagen painters: P.S Kroyer and Michael Ancher. In 1892 Rastrup moved to the island Fyn, where he worked on landscapes and later got a job as an art teacher. Rastrup has traveled in Europe and moved to United States where he stayed from 1922-25. About the artist:
Schwartz was truly a revolutionary and unique artist.
In 1880 he joined a big opposition against the Royal academy in Copenhagen
and formed “the free art schools” with his fellow artists.They felt that they couldn’t grow as artist at the royal academy and startedtheir own school where they learned and got inspired from each other instead of the classical master painters.Schwarts choose to insolate himself from the art industry and was known to be very shy and passionate about his art. His isolation meant that he truly could develop this own paintingstyle and technique. Some of Schwarts few friends was the artists P.S Kröyer and Julius Lange and together they traveled to Spain to paint in 1878. Later on Schwarts got the opportunity to work and decorate on many buildings in Copenhagen. His most famous work is the building “ Glytopteket” After Schwarts death in 1917, the public got for the first time a really good view of his art, and his paintings got frequently exhibited and highly admired and talked about.

Kamma Salto (1890 -1979):
Kamma was educated at the royal art academy in 1914 and was a pupil of Rostrup-Böyesen, Kraesten Iversen and Utzon-Frank. She later became a pupil of Vilhelm. Lundström and traveled to Paris in 1938 to study with Jean Puy. Kamma later married the artist Alex Salto, and together they traveled and visited many of the periods famous painters like the Skagen painters Anna and Michael Ancher, and the modernists EdvardWeie, Jens Adolf Jerichau and Alexander Archipenko. Kammas paintings are known for their powerful bright colors and their beautiful expressive qualities. About the artist
Otto sievert was a very passionated, strong and determinated artist. His paintings was highly revolutionary, provocative and full of passion. Like many revolutionary artists before him, he felt he had to struggle and fight against the cold conservative art industry of his time. Europe in the 1930´ties was time of confusion and depression that infected especially the artists of the time. It was in the 30´ties that Sievert and fellow artists like Otto Dix begain the “Europeen Expressionism” in wich their unique paintingstyle was a way to express the 30´es insecurity and sensibility. Sievert travelled to Germany and saw personally Adolf Hitlers exhibition “Entartete kunst”( meaning Ugly, horrible and deformed art). The Exhibition was arranged personally by Hitler and his followers to mock and ridicule all art wich not was beautyful or acceptable according to the Nazi regime. Hitlers Exhibition hunted and shocked Sievert for the rest of his life. Passionate as Sievart was about his art, he fought back and through his art, newspaper articels and public speaking he spoke the peoples will tofreedom of artistic expression. Sadly like many passionate artists before him, Sievert quickly burned up and died in a age of only 46.

About Börge Sornum (1920-1985):
Sornum was a man of various talents. He was an author of surrealistic poems, a painter and a graphic designer. He was educated at the Academy Julian in Paris, and in the beginning of his carrier he was known for his graphic works of arts and paintings that combined oil with materials like nails, wood and paper. Later Sornum worked with oil on canvas and was known for his modern and abstract compositions. Sornum used the American “Action-painting” technique and became in the end a Danish pop-artist. Henrik Schouboe (1876 -1949)
Schouboe was educated at the royal art academy in 1894 and a pupil of Peter Ilsted. Schouboes modernistic paintings was a sensation at the academy and his paintings got large attention for their modernistic brush stokes and symbolism. Early modernism was just begun in Denmark when Schouboe had his first exhibition in 1906. The critics were stunned and several works from the exhibition was purchased by the National Museum of Fine Art in Copenhagen. Later Schouboe traveled and worked all around Europe where he primarily worked on fjord landscapes and costal landscapes from Scandinavia and sunlit farm landscapes from France and Italy. Schouboe is known to use pure soft colors and light shades.

He is best known for his series of realistic and detailed landscapes with cattle or horses. Steffensen was also an excellent illustrator and did the illustrations for the history novels by the authors Carl Etlars and B.S Ingemann. Gunnar Saietz ( 1936-1973):
Saietz was a pupil of Erik Clemmensen and later left to Paris to study in 1961.
Saietz is known for his colorful artworks with strange beings and objects. Saietz was very influenced by the master painter Hieronymus Bosch and Breughel and experimented a lot with twisted landscapes and with creatures half human and half animal or plant. Saietz lived in France from 1961- 1969 and has traveled in Greenland, Germany and Spain. Saietz has been exhibited all around Denmark and in Sweden, Iceland, Paris, Belgium and Glasgow.

About the artist:
Sigrid Steenstrup belonged to a special group of young painters, who worked together in the Art school of Rostrup Böyesen 1940-50. She did many landscapes both around in Denmark and in Europe but is mostly known for her special landscapes from her hometown and the surroundings in Fur, Denmark. Her landscapes from Fur are all very colorful and powerful painted.
Sigrid knew both the pleasures and the hardships that comes along when you live in the country, and she portrayed it well in her landscape sceneries.

Gerda stroem was a pupil of Gerhard Blom, and was known for her very detailed
“nature mort” and flower paintings. Italy was her favorite country and she travelled
there many times where many of her flower paintings was created. Gerda Stroem was a populair artist both during and after her lifetime and was exhibited many places like Charlottenborg 1907-1934 and Dyrehavens malere 1927-1950.

About Ole Söndergaard ( 1876-1958):
Söndergaard had a long strong friendship with the artist L.A Ring. That friendship influenced Söndergaards art a great deal and like L.A Ring he concentrated on realism in Danish nature scenes rather than making over-romanticized landscapes. Söndergaard was ahead of his time. The realism in Söndergaards art was not popular in the beginning and he was refused to attend the Royal Art Academy and was ridiculed. However later Söndergaard managed to gain a great reputation as an artist and the academy had no choice but accept him in the end. The Academy even made a special exhibition in 1905 with the landscapes they originally refused and ridiculed. (Söndergaard must have had a great laugh out of that.) Söndergaard is especially known for his winter scenes that became well known for their detailed and naturalistic portray of the long Danish winter months. Söndergaard is known to make winter scenes painted with dark blue and gray colors with great details and simplicity. Söndergaard also worked as a drawing teacher from 1903-1915 at Roskilde peoples collage and Roskilde Technical school in Denmark.

Educated at N. Moe og C. Faber in Odense, Denmark. Harald Trolle went to Copenhagen in 1863 to focus on being a landscape painter. Trolle was highly inspired by other Danish painters like P.C Skovgaard. Nature became his true passion and especially his forest scenes were popular. He became famous quite quickly and later his exhibitions became a permanent household attraction at “ Charlottenborg”. Besides Denmark Trolle also travelled and painted in Norway and Germany.

About Carl Langbein Toft (1877 -1958):
Toft was educated at the Royal art academy in 1899 and was a pupil of the master painters Otto Bache, Frants Henningsen and Fr Vermehren. Toft is especially known for his stunning bright colors and most of his paintings are very bright and sunlit. In 1902, Toft traveled to Florence in Italy where he stayed to study the Fresco technique. After tofts time in Italy he felt called by god and studied to be a priest. Toft continued to paint, but his motif became more religious and did a long series of sunlit church interiors and landscapes with cathedrals and churches. Besides painting, Toft also did many decorations and has restored many Danish alter pieces.

About Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770 – 1844)
Thorvaldsen was an extraordinary wonder child, and was the youngest child known to enter the royal art academy at the age of 11. During his time at the academy he was a private pupil of N.A. Abildgaard. Thorvaldsen became quickly one of the most famous artists in Scandinavia due to his young age and brilliant works of arts. Thorvaldsen was a master of sculptures and is behind many visible works in Copenhagen, like the outdoor decorations of the royal prince private quarters at amalienborg and decors at the castle of christiansborg. Thorvaldsen was also a gifted painter and was frequently requested to do portraits of ministers and nobles.
Thorvaldsen frequently traveled and worked in Italy in long periods from 1796-1842. In Italy he worked on many famous projects like on the 35 meter long relief of Alexander the Great at the Palads of del Quirinale in 1812. The project was done in honor of emperor Napoleons arrival in Rome. Tuxen was an artistic genius and was admitted at the royal art academy in 1868 when Tuxen was only 15 years old. He later studied with Léon Bonnat in Paris. Tuxen became a art teacher and tourth in” The Principe on Valeur painting” which was the foundation of French naturalism. Tuxen coworkers at the art school was the master painters Kristian Zahrtmann and P.S Kröyer. The international fame and talent of Tuxen gave him a high social position and was requested to do several works for both the British and Danish Royal family. Among his royal works he did portraits of Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. Anne Marie Telmányi (1893 -1983)
Telmanyi was the daughter of the world famous Danish composer Carl Nielsen. She was educated at the Royal art academy in 1910 where she was a pupil of
Rostrup Böyesen. A year later she was a private pupil of Tycho Jessen in 1911.
In 1926 Telmanyi traveled to Paris where she was educated at The Modern Academy, where she was a pupil of the master painters Othon Friesz and Fernand Leger. Telmany was very interested in the different characters in people and concentrated on working on portraits or interiors. Telmanyi often used her fellow artists friends as models like the Swedish artist Otto Sköld and the Danish actress Bodil Ipsen. Telmanyi traveled all around Denmark to paint her friends and later also traveled and worked in France, Italy, England and Germany. Telmanyi works are known for their great details and impressionistic brush strokes and Telmanyi had a great gift for capturing the models personality and charisma.

Thygesen was greatly inspired by Edward Munch and it was at a Munch exhibition where Thygesen first decided to be an artist. Thygesen was a pupil of Christian Skredsvig in 1899 and later a pupil of Harriet Backer. In 1901 Thygesen traveled to Denmark where he studied at Zartmanns art school. In 1909 Thygesen traveled to Paris where he studied at Academy Colarossi and Academy Matisse where he was a pupil of Andre Lhote and Pedro Araujo. Thygesen also traveled in Munich, Germany: 1904, Italy: 1912-1913 and Berlin: 1929. Thygesen was a very sensitive and passionate artist, very little is known about his art works from before 1904 since he burnt most of his early paintings. His later paintings have a lot in common with Edward Munch and he used strong colors in his works but he also experimented with impressionism. Thygesen also worked on artworks with strong symbolic values. Peter Wilhardt was known as a landscape painter. One of his favorite sceneries was from the forest Dyrehaven and was known for his very accurate and charming paintings from the manymeadows and hills found in Dyrehaven. He was also a member of the union “Dyrehavens Malere”( artists of Dyrehaven). Due to his high talent and fame he later was hired to portrait many members of the Danish royal family. In 1894 Wilhardt opened his own school of art and drawing and run it with a great success until he stopped in 1915 to concentrate on his own art.

Wilhelm Wils ( 1880-1960)
Educated at the school of Frede Aamodt and at the school of Zartmann. Pupil of P.A Schou from 1905-1906. Pupil of Johan Rode from 1908. Wils was one of the leading Danish modernists back in 1915-1920 and lead the art of modernism into its peak during the 1930ties. In his youth, Wils was fascinated by the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and was inspired to work on portraying all layers of the social classes in Copenhagen. Edvard munch was also a great influence and let Wils into the study of the psychological side of the human character. Wils early works were often views from night cafés, theaters and street scenes. Wils also worked on a number of expressive portraits that showed a great insight in the characters personality. One of Wils favorite work places were the amusement park “ Bakken” Where he did a long series of works depicturing people on rides or dinning. The artist Aksel Jorgensen was a close personal friend of Wils and together they did the décor for the restaurant and radio house “ Lorry” Wils works are known for their powerful expressive brushstrokes and known for their dominating Green, blue or red shades. Wils worked primarily in Denmark but has also worked in France, Germany and Italy. About the artist
Wennerwald was a landscape painter, and nature was his beloved friend and inspiration. Wennerwald passion for nature and forrest scenerys brought him to countries like Norway, Italy and Germany where he stayed to paint. Wennerwald is known to follow the “traditional”Danish landscape painting style, using lightgreen colours with dark green shadows like the fellow artist Niels Skovgaard. About the artist:
Johannes Wilhjelm was a close friend and pupil of the Danish master painter Zahrtmann. Their relationship grew even closer when Zahrtmanns sister married Johannes wilhjelm brother. Wilhjelm was first a pupil of P.S Kröyer in 1893 and later a pupil of Zahrtmann in 1903. Wilhjelm and Zahrtmann traveled often to Italy to work together. In Italy Wilhjelm got strongly inspired by the sceneries and made several light filled and powerful landscapes. When returning to Denmark, Wilhjelm concentrated working with Danish farm landscapes where he received fame and attention by his colorful but serious portraits of farmers and peasants at work.

Professor Sigurd Wandel ( 1875 – 1947)
Educated Royal academy of arts in 1892. Attended the school of Zahrtmann from 1895-1904. Attended the academy in Dresden, Germany from 1896-1897. Wandel was a true enfant terrible in Danish art industry. He constantly fourth with his teacher, Kristan Zahrtmann and finally left his school since he felt his works were to criticized. At the academy in Dresden, Wandel went back to the basics where he studied and copied the old masters like Rembrandt and Titan. This experience later played an important role in the carrier of Wandel as he moved on to experiment with early modernism from 1907. The modern works of Wandel were like a continuation of the old masters. The form and movement were as traditional as the masters but the colors and lights were vibrant with a mixture of German Expressionism and Nordic Impressionism. Wandel worked as a teacher for females at the Royal academy from 1908-1919. But in 1920 Wandel was selected and given the esteemed title as professor among several elder and respected artists. This caused a great uproar and many of the other professors and pupils refused to have anything to do with Wandel. Luckily with time, Wandel was accepted and especially his series of family portraits became his breakthrough in the art industry. Besides his famous series of family portraits, Wandel also worked with still-life’s, flowers and landscapes. Among many of Wandels pupils at the academy were: Poul S. Nielsen, Lauritz Hartz, Vesta Lippert , Jack Kampmann, and Richard Mortensen. Wandel worked all over Europe and stayed in Iceland from 1893, was on the Ingolf expedition to Greenland in 1895, Italy from 1896, Dresden from 1896-1897, The Nederland’s from 1899 and Paris from 1935. Werenskiold studied in Christiania ( Now Oslo) in 1873–5 under Julius Middelthun, who discovered his unusual gift for drawing, and then at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich (1876–9). Among his early paintings revealed an interest in individual personality and psychology even in a traditional academic subject. In 1878, while on a visit to Kristiania, Werenskiold met the collector and editor Peter Christien Asbjørnsen (1812–85) and was engaged as an illustrator for his new edition of Norwegian fairy tales. Werenskiold achieved a striking combination of realistic observation, fantasy and humor, his imaginary creatures being especially successful. During the 1880s Werenskiold was also active as a painter. He left Munich early in 1881 and settled in Paris where he came to know the work of contemporary French artists. He was initially intrigued by both Naturalism and Impressionism, but eventually found it impossible to abandon the feeling for form and line that he sensed as lacking in these styles. In 1883 he returned to Norway and soon became the chief promoter of a strictly national art, based on the study of Norwegian landscape and folk life. At this time began his long series of portraits representing outstanding compatriots that eventually included Edvard Grieg and Henrik Ibsen. Born in the village Praestö, Denmark. Educated at the technical school of arts and at private art schools. He has traveled and painted all around Scandinavia but worked mostly in Denmark. Wolffbrandt loved nature and was a 100 % out door person who often went out to hunt. Wolfbrandt decented from a German family of artists who worked at the Holmegaard glass fabrics in Denmark.

Educated at Karlstad from 1895. London in 1897. Attended the School of Otto Lohr in Germany from 1899. Educated at the school of Schmid-Reutte and at the Royal academy of arts in 1900. Private pupil of Kristian Zahrtmann from 1902-1908. Wolmar was born in Sweden but lived in Denmark most of his life. Wolmar was highly influenced by Kristian Zahrtmann and belonged to the group of early modernists. Wolmar often worked together with the fellow modernists Karl Isakson and Edvard Weie and together they shared a small studio in Copenhagen. Wolmar worked primarily with landscapes and his oils are often categorized as modern works with a touch of cubism. Wolmar was also influenced by the old masters from the Danish Golden age and like them he preferred to paint nature views in different lights. Unlike the other modernists of his time who worked with strong color contrasts, Wolmar preferred using few colors, and concentrated on color nuances instead. Wolmer was very much ahead of his time and won numerous prizes and scholarships that gave him the opportunity to study and work in London from 1897, Germany from 1898-1901. Niels Walseth (1914-2001)
Walseth was brought up in a home filled with paintings as both his parents were painters. He was educated at Teknisk Skole (the Technical School) in Denmark, where the old painter Jacob Meyer inspired him to carry on the traditions from the great old painters at Charlottenborg.Walseth has highly influenced by the masters, Peder Mönsted and H. A Brendekilde and continued their tradition in portraying sunlit landscapes and exteriors. His motifs were everything from small fishing village in Zealand to motifs he found on his many journeys to Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Bayern and Norway, where he also exhibited.

Attended Kröyers art school and a pupil of Kröyer and Zahrtmann from 1886-89. Wang was a landscape painter and rarely painted anything else. He was a pupil of the master painter P.S Kröyer and attended his art school. Wang is especially known for his landscapes from the country between Horsens and Juelsminde in Denmark. Many of his sceneries have a sunset or sunrise in them. Wang has been exhibited in Denmark, Sweden, Berlin, Paris, Chicago and Belgium. Wilhelm Ferdinand Xylander (1840 -1913)
Born in Copenhagen. Xylander was educated at the Royal academy of fine arts in 1858. Xylander came from a fine Bayern family and traveled as a young man to Hamburg and Munich where he was a private pupil of his uncle, the known artist Chr Morgenstern in 1861. Xylander later worked and traveled in London from 1865-1868. Skagen from 1872-1884. Xylander returned to Hamburg in 1886, were he worked until 1890. He then returned to Copenhagen where he remained until his death in 1912. Xylander developed a great talent for marine works very early in his carrier and specialized especially in evening scenes or moonlight views. Xylander was a great admirer of Old Dutch art and studied the works of Aert van der Neer and Rembrandt although his carrier. Xylander also had a strong fascination for the works of Claude le lorrain. Xylander was a passionate collector of the old masters and donated the majority of his collection to the National Gallery in Copenhagen. The Xylander collection was so immense and important that new champers were opened and an art scholarship in Xylanders name was founded. Xylander archived great fame during his lifetime and won prestigious awards in Vienna in 1873 and in Philadelphia in 1876. Xylanders works were featured at the world fair in Vienna in 1873 and exhibited in Philadelphia 1876. and Charlottenborg: 1862-1906. Zieler was educated at the Royal art academy in 1928 and was a pupil of Karl Larsen.Zieler also studied at the painting school studio of Harald Giersing from 1926-27 and took art lessons from Aksel Jörgensen at the fresco school from 1927- 32. Zieler was a multi talented artist and worked with many different media like oil paintings, drawings, graphic artworks, interior designs and cover designs to books and posters. Zieler has traveled in Finland, Norway, Paris, Italy, Germany and Bali where he did many landscapes and portraits. The motifs of Zieler are known for their powerful dark colors mixed with light painting strokes and modernistic views. Zieler has been exhibited numerous times all around Scandinavia and in New York, Paris, Rome and Glasgow.

Ôllgaard was educated at the royal art academy in 1931 and a private pupil of Alex Jürgensen from 1929-31. Öllgaards fame begun emedially in 1933 when his abstract and surrealistic oils was introduced at the artists fall exhibition in Copenhagen. From that time Ôllgaard became and remained an important and central Danish modern expressionist. Ôllgaard co funded the modernistic art group “Linien” in 1934. Other members of the art group was Richard Mortensen and Ejler Bille. Ôllgaard is a typical Nordic expressionist and known for his very impressive and powerful landscapes portraits and forest scenes. Ôllgaard was a passionate and lively character and continued painting even through the last 3 years of his life where he was severely handicapped due to sickness. Ôllgaards art has been compared to the likes of Max Ernest and Edward Munch.

Carl Frederik Aagaard ( 1833-1895)
Educated at the Royal academy of fine arts in 1852. Pupil of G.C Hilkier, Johan Peter Aagaard and P.C Skovgaard. Aagaard was highly influenced by his teacher P.C Skovgaard. Like Skovgaard, Aagaard worked with romantic landscapes of extraordinary details and lights. In Aagaards early days he worked together with artist Henrich Hansen. Together they worked on the interior decors for The cathedral in Roskilde and at The Royal Oprah and theater House in Copenhagen. Aagaards décor is still visible to this day where he did a large landscape from the ceiling to the wall at the private chambers of the royal family. Aagaard traveled to Paris and Italy where he worked from 1870-1876. The many sketches from his travels was later finished in Denmark and Aagaard famous work “The amphitheater in Sicily” was exhibited at the Copenhagen museum in 1895. Other famous works includes “ at the Forest” Exhibited at Reykjavik, Iceland 1880 and “ Sunset at saltholm” Exhibited at Aarhus Museum in 1889. The works of Aagaard has frequently been exhibited all over Europe and many works are kept in National Galleries worldwide.

Jens Hansen-Aarslev ( 1847-1928):
Educated at School of Prince Ferdinand from 1870-72. Educated at the royal academy of arts in 1878, and pupil at the School of Léon Bonnats in Paris from 1878-1881. Hansen-Aarslev begun his carrier as a landscape painter and worked especially on farm landscapes. His works were considered very promising and he received many sponsorships so he finally was accepted at the Royal academy of arts. Hansen-Aarslev came from a very humble background and his own parents were against him working with art, which they considered foolish and a waste of time. However nothing could stop Hansen-Aarslev and he continued working. In 1878 Hansen-Aarslev was accepted at the esteemed school of Leon Bonnat in Paris. There he worked together with P.A Schou and Hans Nik Hansen. In Hansen-Aarslev later years he worked especially with portraits and figure scenes. Which were considered very sensitive and fill of emotions. Like many passion filled artists Hansen-Aarslev had a powerful temper and was extremely sensitive. So much so that when he met and fell in love with Norwegian artist Kitty Kielland and she did not want him, he quickly moved to a remote farmhouse at the country. The heartbreak crippled him for life and he never participated in exhibitions nor wanted to take part in the art industry again. Very little is known about the last 20 years of Hansen-Aarslev. He never talked to his few neighbors and every one who tried to contact him was chased away from his house. Some few witnesses like the local police occasionally forced their way in to check the health of the artist. Their reports were shocking! One reported finding the artist dressed in old newspapers and wearing a self-made calfskin wig he had glued on his balding head. Another saw him out working the fields wearing a old sack around his waist and wearing thighs and socks around his neck as a scarf. His house was filled with crippled animals he had adopted and was taking care of. Among them was a one-legged Hen and a 3 legged dog. Hansen-Aarslev never stopped painting however, since it was reported that his house was packed with paintings everywhere. But one was not allowed to buy them or touch them. If they did they were chased away from the house. The love, Hansen-Aarslev had for the Norwegian artist Kitty Kielland never stopped. In 1928 the police came a final time to take him to the hospital and found him lying on the ground next to a newly painted portrait of his beloved Kitty. When the police touched him he whispered “ my beloved, I will soon be near you” Hansen-Aarslev used his last strength to try to fight of the police and insisted to walk with no help to the ambulance waiting outside for him. The police finally agreed and let Hansen-Aarslev walk alone down the road until he weekly reached the ambulance and died.
